His advancement was steady, but by the time he was an adult (4 years), he felt he had learned all he could from his small pack. He was frustrated by the lack of advancement and was almost ready to start wandering two years earlier than most thri-kreen. However, before he left, there was a visitor to his pack. His elders had sensed his frustration and sent out a call for a Kiltektet wanderer (much as they loathed the idea of the soft and cowardly Kiltektet, they were wise enough to know that it was what Ka needed).
The Kiltektet wanderer was named Si'latho (grower and finder of life/experience). Si'latho talked with Ka and almost immediately found that Ka was ready to become a Kiltektet missionary with little prompting from Si'latho. And so Ka and Si'latho left Ka's pack when Ka was 5 years old and they traveled together for a little more than a year. Ka learned muh during that time and was finally ready to wander the world on his own.
The first place Ka went was the outskirts of Tyr. He was fascinated by human cities, though he feared to actually enter them because he feared the great teeming masses of beings to be found there. However, soon after arriving in the region, he was attacked by a pack of Belgoi. Ka's life would have ended then and there but for the interference of a wandering mage who took pity on Ka.
Ka had never before encountered magic and was fascinated, for it was different than The Way or priestly miracles. Ka and the mage talked for a day or more and eventually the mage, Mandarius, told Ka of the plight of the preservers on Athas and how the Veiled Alliance wanted to change that.
Ka liked Mandarius and felt sorry for the plight of the mages on Athas so he asked how he could help. After a long, appraising look, Mandarius told Ka the name of a Veiled Alliance contact in Tyr that he could contact.
Ka immediately went into the city, briefly overcoming his fear of crowds, and found the contact. From there, Ka was accepted on a provisional basis into the Veiled Alliance and was told that to gain full acceptance, he must complete a mission. Ka, having nothing better to do, accepted gladly.
There began an adventure to find and destroy the source of an evil anti- psionic plague. His companions were Shayira (a human earth priest), Aljara (an ekven mage), Shannon (a 1/2 giant warrior), and Eagle (a human ranger). The adventure lasted for many months and Ka gained much experience while traveling the length of the Tyr region and back (several times). Eventually, they found and destroyed the source of the plague in some ruins in the Eastern Tyr region.
When they came back to Tyr, they were all accepted as full members of the Veiled Alliance in a small ceremony. He was assigned a code-name of ZikChaka and his contact was Sade, a master mage of Tyr.
After a few weeks of rest, they were sent on another mission, to join with a new mage traveling from Urik and then to explore the ruins they had found on their last mission. This they accomplished, but during the exploration, a gate was found into the Outlands city of Sigil. While the others went back to report of this to the Alliance, Ka decided to explore Sigil.
He was amazed at the difference between the places, for Sigil was far different than Athas. Metal was abundant, and thri-kreen were not. The climate was humid and not to his liking, but he found, that despite this, he liked this new world far more than the barren Athas.
And then he met an elf...
